So the WB has decided to cancel Angel after 5 seasons, despite the fact that it’s consistently its #2 rated show. This is the same assinine crap that Fox pulled with Joss Whedon’s last bit of brilliance, Firefly. Do these networks just have no clue, or what?
If only they would just realize that, with 100 channels and 1000 shows (I’m ballparking numbers here obviously), not every show is going to be in the top 10. Networks like Comedy Central have figured out the value of a cult audience, and that’s why shows like South Park, the Daily Show and Chapelle’s Show are on and prospering. (Though I’m still pissed over what they did to MST3K…)
There has to be a way for a show to be “cult” yet pull a profit. Someone’s just not trying to make the numbers work hard enough. Easier to just toss another dart at the board and hope for another fluke Survivor or Seinfeld I guess.
Oh well… look at all the quality programming WB has. Angel is clearly just getting in the way.
How is it that Joss Whedon is so mistreated by the networks, but people like Stephen Bochco or David E. Kelley have free license to make whatever they want?
I’m not bitter or even upset… this doesn’t surprise me a bit actually. I guess less TV to watch is good, but I hate seeing talent go unrecognized like this.
